Both New Yorkers, Susan and Bill met by chance in Newport after Bill lost his wife and Susan having lost her partner of many years. Susan previously ran a one bedroom bed and breakfast out of her home. Bill saw The Spring Seasons Inn for sale one day while driving by. They bought The Spring Seasons Inn in October of 2001 and their first guests arrived Columbus Day weekend after having only just moved in the weekend before Needless to say, it was a very, very busy week. Bill & Susan took an Inn that was not doing a lot of business and turned it around by providing first rate service. Word spread through word of mouth and through our new web site.
With a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Susan ran the behavior program at a local center for developmentally disabled adults. After 26 years in the human services industry, Susan was laid off for budget reasons. Having had a background in the restaurant and catering industry during and after her college years, Susan decided to open a tea room and gift shop at the Inn. As the only Tea Room in Newport and the only one in a B&B/Inn that is open to the public, it has turned out to be quite popular.
Formerly a middle school computer and special education teacher, Bill put his middle school online with its own web site, the only middle school in the state at that time to have a web presence. The ability to get The Spring Seasons Inn online back when very few Inns had a web presence made a big difference in their success. A combat veteran of the Vietnam war, Bill retired from the Army Reserve as a senior Military Police Officer and works for the US Air Force at Naval Station Newport.
Both Susan and Bill have served on the boards of two of our local bed and breakfast associations. Susan has had several positions with Newport County Inns and Bed and Breakfasts including President, while Bill has served as Treasurer of that group for several years. Bill is currently the Treasurer of another B&B group, Newport County Inns and Bed and Breakfasts. Bill has also served on the board of The Historic Hill Association, a neighborhood association for many years. Prior to meeting Susan, Bill volunteered as a firefighter, Scoutmaster of his sons Boy Scout troop and a Little League and Soccer coach.
Susan’s gardens in front of the Inn have won numerous awards from Newport in Bloom including Best in B&B Category. It gives us a lot of satisfaction to see people from all over the world stop to take pictures in front of the gardens.
Susan and Bill strive to make your experience in Newport a memorable one, one that leaves you wanting to come back again and again, to A Better Way to Stay, that of the B&B way.
