April 13th, 2010 by billfarrell

Tue, 13 Apr 2010 13:44:18After one of its most successful years ever, the Folk Festival Newport RI will continue this summer with two days in the sun at Fort Adams State Park. A mix of contemporary and classic artists will be featured throughout this year’s festival, which is scheduled for Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1. Highlighting the list of performers are The Avett Brothers, Levon Helm’s Ramble on the Road, The Swell Season, John Pine, Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket (better known as Jim James), Brandi Carlile and Andrew Bird.

Officially named George Wein’s Folk Festival Newport RI after its co-founder, the festival will also welcome Doc Watson & David Holt, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Calexico, Blitzen Trapper, Richie Havens, Sam Bush, The Low Anthem, Tim O’Brien, The Felice Brothers, Justin Townes Earle, Tao Seeger Band, A.A. Bondy, The Punch Brothers with Chris Thile, Dawes, Nneka, Horse Feathers, Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three, Ben Sollee & Daniel Martin Moore, Sarah Jarosz, Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons, O’Death and Liz Longley. More artists will be announced at a later date. The complete breakdown of artists performing each day is available below.

The Folk Festival Newport RI will kick off with a special concert from Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers at the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Friday, July 30. Tim O’Brien and Sarah Jarosz will also perform.

Tickets for the Folk Festival Newport RI go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. through Tickemaster. Two-day passes will be available for $125 while single day tickets will be sold for $69. Discounted tickets for children aged 3 to 15 will be available for $15 each day. Tickets for the kick-off show range in price from $30 to $85.

“Newport is like a second home to me and I always look forward to the next visit,” said Wein in a press release. “After celebrating the 50th anniversary with Pete [Seeger] and 17,000 fans, I can’t wait to see the magic unfold over the three days.”

“There is something so perfect about being in Newport near the water and that old stone fort – all gathered in to sing with family and friends – that keeps me wanting to come back year after year,” explained Yames in a press release. “It’s like the walls of the fort are arms, and I feel secure when I am near them, protected by the spirits there – past, present, and future. And, I like to hear our voices bouncing off those old stone walls as my eye drifts to the sailboats on the seashore and the people just smiling and taking it all in.”

While in Newport, stay at The Spring Seasons Inn.
